Muhlenberg County was once a thriving coal producing county. During most of the 19th Century, the main industry in Muhlenberg County was agriculture and tobacco. Coal Mining was the most important business during the 20th Century. At one time there were many men employed in under-ground mining and when strip mining became predominant, Muhlenberg became the largest coal producing county in the USA.

Paradise, Kentucky was the village made famous by Paradise the song written by John Prine. Located on Green River, it was a small village with two stores. The post office was in one of the general stores and sold groceries as well as dry goods and hardware. The Peabody Coal Company did not actually haul the town away. Paradise was not stripped, and the Tennessee Valley Authority removed the town.

Lake Malone State Park is located in Muhlenberg County. There is plenty of swimming, camping, boating and hiking opportunities. There are beautiful lake homes surrounding this 850 acre lake stocked with bass, crappie and game fish that provides excellent fishing year-round. With a sand beach, campgrounds, boat dock and hiking trails, Lake Malone is a wonderful place to visit.
